Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the studio!  Ask away....

Will I have to stand all the time in the introduction workshop?
No. The copper foiling process and even the leading process have many stages that can be done sitting down although the scoring of the glass is done standing as you need your upper body weight to score efficiently. There will be some standing and some sitting down over every session. When you start painting, most of the time will be sitting down!

I have done the introduction workshop in copperfoiling, do you do other workshops?
I occasionally put on specific workshops such as garden art but the best way to progress into stained glass is to book onto the open sessions, alone or with a friend. You can start with 10 hours (4 sessions) and have a total overview of the process, working on your own design, choosing glass, cutting more complex shapes also with mechanical tools, have a go at painting, improve your foiling and your soldering, apply patina and wax.  All those steps that were set aside for lack of time in the introductory workshop.  Because I am with you at every step of the process to instruct , guide and advise, you will be able to achieve what you set out to do. You can decide you want to finish a project in those 10 hours and I will tell you if what you have in mind is achievable (time, skills, size) or if you will need more time or amendments to your first idea. If you have no idea what you might want to do, I can guide you on that too. I have seen so many projects in 25 years of practice!

Can I do the 3-hour introduction workshop but do leading instead of copperfoiling?
This is not possible. If you have 20 minutes available you can make a great sandwich but you cannot cook a 3 course meal.
Leading is a very long process and probably more costly too, with steps that copperfoiling does not need. Designing the cartoon once you have decided what size leads you will be using, practicing cutting leads, mitring the angles without squashing the leads, practicing soldering without melting said leads before soldering for real, cementing, cleaning the project before polishing it are all steps that take time. Three hours is not enough unless you have the super power of stretching time!

Can I come with a friend?
Absolutely. This is a space for friendship, old and new. We create better and more efficiently if we share knowledge, ideas, photos, and laughs. Just make sure you let me know you are coming together when you book.

Can I bring my dog?
Sorry this is a hard no.  This is not a safe environment for a dog as most probably there are shards of glass on the floor.  We are also walking around with sheet glass and we do not want to trip over a dog.  There may also be other users that are allergic to dogs.  I love dogs but not in the studio.

Can I do some of the work at home?
Absolutely.  Just make sure you are aware of the health and safety issues relating to working with glass and stained glass generally.  It is not something you can do on your kitchen table!   Ask me about safe practice.
Some studio users take everything home between every session to progress their project faster, some users leave their project under construction in the studio as they know they have no time nor a safe space at home. Both options are right.
